Hellboy was summoned as part of a Nazi study into the occult during the Second World War. They hoped the result would be a weapon that would turn the tide of the war in the Axis’ favour, but instead the red horned demon fell into Allied hands. From that moment the demon, coined Hellboy, was nurtured by the US Air Force and became the backbone of the BPRD – the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense – and fighting in the defence of mankind and the forces of good.

Integrated into human society the best a giant red demon could be, Hellboy regularly files down his two horns to appear “more normal” and was raised as a “normal boy”. He displays none of the fearsome qualities demons have a reputation for and his distinct strengths have made him the grit and brute-force behind the BPRD.

Other members of this elite team of uniquely skilled individuals include Hellyboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, Johann Krause, Prof. Trevor Bruttenholm - who founded the division - and many more.  Together they battle the dangers of the occult using their exceptional abilities.
